Certain USB extenders are compatible (the most effective) and others are not compatible. Although you can connect to a USB 3.0 device using the USB 2.0 cable, in order to get the full USB 3.0 speeds it is necessary to change the cabling you have in place. USB 3.0 cables contain many internal cables, and are typically blue and more robust than the older USB 2.0 cables.
